Balanga City folks have all the reasons to be proud and happy these days and so with local officials lead by Mayor Jose Enrique S. Garcia III.

Balanga City was chosen by the Literacy Coordination Council (LCC) the second Most Outstanding Component City in the national competition for most outstanding local government units in the cities category in awarding ceremonies held last September 10 in Teachers Camp, Baguio City.

Tagum City in Davao del Norte, considered a hall of famer in the annual tilt, was chosen first place. Three other contenders were Malaybalay City in Bukidnon, Sorsogon City in Bicol region, and Cadiz City in Negros Occidental.

It was the third time that Tagum City won the First Place.

Dr. Leonardo Zapanta, officer-in-charge of the Office of Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, DepEd, Balanga City, who nominated Balanga, said Balanga City, however, won first place in the regional competition.

Out of 17 entries, Balanga City was chosen among the five top cities in the final selection, Zapanta said.

The validation team composed of representatives from the Department of Education (lead agency), Philippine Information Agency, Department of Labor and Employment, and the Department of Interior and Local Government visited a number of barangays (villages) in Balanga last August and found out that the city was qualified enough to be in the top five cities.

The recently-held education summit in Balanga City is another stepping stone for this component city to gain mileage that will give us edge over other contenders in the forthcoming competition for best local government units.
